Sequencing the Salmon Genome:

A Deliberative Public Engagement

The Engagement

Our Funders

This deliberation was run in November 2008 by an interdisciplinary research group at the University of British Columbia.

We invited 25 diverse members of the BC public to participate in a discussion about the potential benefits and concerns of sequencing the salmon genome, including the areas of basic salmon biology, evolution, economics and environment. This discussion ran over two weekends in November 2008. We expected no prior knowledge of the subject. We asked the participants simply to bring a willingness to listen, discuss, and share their thoughts and perspectives. We hoped they would help us generate useful policy advice.

On this website you will find information on what genome sequencing entails and why it is important to talk about salmon. There is also access to an information booklet and background readings which were given to the participants.

Further research and outputs are in process. Please check this website for updates.

Many thanks,
Face to Face Research Team
